  • I want my dog to get his/her CGC or Therapy Dog Certification. Do you offer those classes?
Normally, all that is required to pass the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) or Therapy Dog tests is taught in the Beginner II class. We offer the CGC test at the end of each series of classes. We do not offer Therapy Dog testing.
  • My dog is a mixed breed or a breed that is not recognized by the AKC.  Can we still participate?
Absolutely yes! Our classes are open to all breeds and mixed breeds. AKC (and many other venues) allow participation by a sound dog of any breed, as long he/she is registered with them. Find out more information from the AKC Canine Partners Program.
  • I have had my dog trained by a private trainer.  What is the benefit of the K-9 OTC?
While private training is beneficial, group classes teach you to teach your dog to obey even in the presence of other dogs and people.
  • How many classes are in a session?  How long is each class?
Each session consists of six 45-minute classes and an optional CGC or STAR Puppy test on Wednesday after the 6th training class.
  • How do I know what class to enroll in? My dog already knows sit, down, etc."
Generally, all dogs start in the Beginner class, unless you are already competing in AKC events. Enrollment in any class other than Beginner requires the approval of the Training Director or instructor.
  • Do I have to enroll to see your training?
No, you are welcome to come watch our classes any Tuesday evening that we are in session (September to June). Please contact us first to let us know you are coming.
  • Is membership in K-9 OTC the same as AKC membership?
There is no such thing as individual AKC membership. However, if you are interested in competing in AKC events, we can help lead you in the right direction.
  • How do I become a member?
In order to become a member of K-9 OTC, you must: 1. Attend 2 six-week training sessions to determine if we are the right club for you 2. Be an active participant in Club functions (e.g., volunteering at trials and matches, attending general meetings) 3. Be sponsored by two current members of K-9 OTC who are not related to you. 4. Pay the annual dues of $50. 5. Your application must be approved by the Board of Directors and then by the General Membership.
